Cambodia × Japan: KAWAII-CON 2024 Recycled Kimono Remake Contest a Huge Success

At KAWAII-CON 2024, where Cambodian and Japanese cultures intersect, a Recycled Kimono Remake Contest was held. Within just one month of creative production, young Cambodian designers breathed new life into traditional Japanese kimonos, producing stunning fashion pieces that blended the elegance of Edo with Cambodia’s innovative spirit.

Behind the Scenes of the Remake Contest

From November 2-3, 2024, at Factory Phnom Penh, Cambodian designers received kimonos and began crafting their entries for the contest. The theme was “Fusion of Tradition and Innovation.”

Around 30 designers freely reimagined kimonos donated from Japan, incorporating elements of Edo-period traditional patterns with Cambodian national costume motifs. The result was a series of uniquely creative fashion pieces.

On the day of the event, the completed designs were showcased in a fashion show, where the designers passionately spoke about their work.

The audience was deeply impressed, with reactions such as:

“A perfect blend of tradition and modernity!”

“I’m amazed by the talent of Cambodian designers!”

The Winning Design & Judges’ Comments

The Grand Prize was awarded to Ms.Ngoun Narocomi from Raffles International College Phnom Penh. Her masterpiece incorporated Edo-era indigo dyeing techniques while integrating a traditional Cambodian silhouette into a stunning dress. Judges praised it as “a brilliant fusion of both cultures.”

Her design featured colors inspired by Cambodian architecture and sunsets, blending traditional silhouettes with kimono elements, ultimately securing first place in the competition.

Judges Panel:

H.E. Ek Buntha (Deputy Director, Cambodian Ministry of Culture and Fine Arts)

Ms.Reiko Yajima (Kimono Dressing Expert, Japan)

Ms.Sara Zahn (Owner & Curator, Curio)

Ms.Jane Clarbour (Head of Fashion Design & Marketing, Raffles International College)

The panel evaluated entries based on design, creativity, and technical skill to determine the winners.

A Sustainable Future Through Kimono Remake

This project aims to revitalize forgotten or discarded kimonos, contributing to sustainable fashion. In Japan, an estimated 1 trillion yen worth of kimonos remain unused each year. This contest serves as a meaningful step toward breathing new life into these garments.

JCI LAB CO., LTD is committed to continuing this initiative, strengthening cultural exchange between Japan and Cambodia, and promoting sustainability in the fashion industry.

The Future of KAWAII-CON

KAWAII-CON will continue as a platform for cultural exchange between Cambodia and Japan, with plans for further editions beyond 2025. The event will offer even more programs that celebrate Japanese pop culture, traditional arts, and Cambodian creativity.
