Blending Cultures and Embracing Sustainability

A key element of this year’s inaugural Kimono Remake Contest at KAWAII-CON is the fusion of Japanese and Cambodian cultures. Designers aim to incorporate traditional Cambodian elements and styles into the kimono material, creating designs that harmonize the beauty of both cultures. Sustainability is also a focus, as designs are expected to align with the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), particularly Goal 12: Responsible Consumption and Production.

Addressing the Kimono Disposal Issue

Japan faces a significant challenge in dealing with the disposal of traditional kimonos. Despite their cultural and historical value, many kimonos remain unused or are discarded due to lifestyle and fashion changes. According to a 2022 report by Japan’s Ministry of the Environment, around 798,000 tons of clothing are supplied to the domestic market annually, with 64.5% eventually discarded. In 2023 alone, nearly ¥1 trillion worth of kimonos are expected to be discarded in Japan (TBS News, 2023).

KAWAII-CON 2024 aims to address this issue by giving new life to these kimonos through the Kimono Remake Contest. Cambodian designers will creatively transform these traditional garments, blending Japanese heritage with Cambodian craftsmanship. This contest promotes sustainability by encouraging the responsible use of limited resources and the reuse of cultural assets.

Don’t miss this unique opportunity to witness the convergence of cultural creativity and sustainable design!
